Black and White (Preto e Branco) succeeds the Hidden Landscapes, from which the sinuosity of line and the seven spaces that structure the composition are preserved.
However, the chromatic nature that identifies the artist’s work since the early 1950s is discontinued, being replaced by the monochromatic use of black in successive layers of different density.
The brightest white is, therefore, the white of the canvas, without the application of any transparency.
Nikias Skapinakis, of Greek descent, was born in 1931. He attended a course in architecture which he abandoned in order to dedicate himself to painting, an activity he has maintained until the present day. He was an Honorary Member of the National Society of Fine Arts and in 2013 he was awarded the Portuguese Society of Authors Visual Arts Prize.
