This exhibition, open to the public until the day before the auction, pays tribute to Portuguese art and artists, who have occupied a central place in Artur Jorge’s choices since he started collecting art in the 1970s. For the auctioneer, “This is one of the best sets of 20th century painting presented to the Portuguese public, in the last 20 years.”
This is the “Second Part” of a set of paintings, sculptures and “objets d’art” gathered over almost 40 years by this compulsive collector. In December 2010, around 50 works from the Artur Jorge Collection were auctioned by Christie’s in Paris. This “Second Part” focuses mainly on Portuguese painting and sculpture, with works by Arpad Szenes, Amadeo Souza-Cardoso, Mário Cesariny, Cruzeiro Seixas, Júlio Pomar, Joaquim Rodrigo, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Julião Sarmento, Rui Chafes, Jorge Vieira, João Cutileiro and Paiva & Gusmão among others.
In addition to these celebrated national names, other important international artists are also represented, such as Antoni Tàpies, Joseph Beuys, Fernand Léger and Sonia Delaunay.
Artur Jorge Braga de Melo Teixeira, was born in 1946 in Oporto, and coached sixteen soccer teams both in Portugal and abroad. Interested in art and culture, this trainer has for 40 years collected several works by Portuguese artists.
