Roberto Santandreu’s work, in its productive diversity, presents clearly recognisable lines of continuity and coherence, in the works that he now exhibits.
What is photographed here in varied forms and from different earthly topics belongs, in the real world, to the most basic of urban equipment, drains that hiding the waste and circulatory routes of human activity, in its strictly biological and technological dimension. He hides the intolerable and the ugly but useful. However, on a broader plane, these openings, cut into the asphalt or sidewalk, are closed doors to both obscurity and to the collective unconsciousness that we fear to openly share.
Born in Milan, in 1948, of Chilean nationality, from early youth he showed interest in the art of photography. He studied in Chile, Brazil, Mexico, Costa Rica and Italy. He was an assistant to the Chilean photographer Tito Vásquez. In 1973, he left his country worked in Oslo and later in London. In 1975, he settled in Lisbon, where he served as coordinator of the Audio-visual team coordinator for the General Directorate for Permanent Education. Nowadays he works with several visual artists, producing photographic material for editions of art books and others.
Alongside his professional work, he continues to produce his work and has exhibited regularly since 1996.
